Real Salt Lake loans defender Bret Halsey to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

HERRIMAN, Utah — Real Salt Lake announced today that it has agreed to loan defenseman Bret Halsey to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the USL Championship for the remainder of the season. RSL reserves the right to terminate the loan if necessary.

Halsey, 22, is in his second season with Real Salt Lake, having joined the club in 2021 as the 7th overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft and a member of the University of Virginia’s Adidas generation. Halsey has spent the majority of his time playing for the Real Monarchs, registering three MLS NEXT Pro appearances this year, while playing 19 games in 2021 when the club was still part of the USL Championship.

Real Salt Lake finished last season in spectacular fashion, booking their spot in the 2021 MLS Audi Cup Qualifiers on Decision Day before advancing to the Western Conference Finals after a 14-14-6 record in the regular season. Saturday’s game at the Rio Tinto Stadium against the star-studded LAFC featuring Carlos Vela (Mexico), Gareth Bale (Wales) and Giorgio Chiellini (Italy) is set to threaten the venue’s all-time attendance mark, which has fallen in September 2018, against Zlatan and the LA Galaxy.
