Arsenal are keeping tabs on Federico Dimarco as Mikel Arteta widens their search for a new defender in the market.

According TuttoMercatoWebFederico Dimarco is attracting interest from Arsenal as the Inter Milan star has emerged as a transfer target for the north London side. Mikel Arteta has widened his search for a new defender to compete for different positions as the Gunners ponder an approach for the Italian.

Federico Dimarco finally has a season under his belt in which he can measure his progress at Inter Milan. For years since being promoted to the youth side, the full-back has been sent out on numerous loans. Finally, under Simone Inzaghi, the left-back had a chance and he flourished.

Although he made a couple of important appearances in the 2021/22 season, he is yet to cement his position in the squad as Inter narrowly lost their Serie A crown to their rivals in ‘AC Milan. Of his 32 games in the league, only 13 have been starts, showing there may not be enough confidence in him to become the No. 1 pick.

Additionally, the January arrival of Robin Gosens has made it difficult for Dimarco to secure a starting spot in the title-seeking side. However, Inzaghi sees him as a top-notch squad player as the manager selected the player to play as a left-sided centre-back in many games throughout the campaign.

According to reports in Italy, Inzaghi would like to keep Dimarco but Arsenal are now circling the versatile defender as Arteta considers a new player to strengthen his backline. Arsenal’s main requirement is to bring in a backup left-back, who could also slot into central defense if needed.

The Gunners have solid players in both positions, and Dimarco is unlikely to dislodge Kieran Tierney or Gabriel Magalhaes from their respective roles. However, the Inter star could prove to be an effective backup as he could fill multiple positions. Arteta’s main intention is to sign left-back cover after Tierney’s injury for the latter part of the season had a negative effect on their first four ambitions.

Arsenal have other targets on their radar like Bologna’s Aaron Hickey. Even though reports have emerged that Arsenal have agreed a deal with Bologna for Hickey, the signing is reportedly not close as Arteta continues to widen his search for a new defender to bolster his backline.

Thus, Dimarco has emerged as a contender as Inter may be willing to agree a €20-25m deal, despite the defender signing a new contract in 2021. The 24-year-old is certainly a viable option and versatile enough to slot into Arteta’s plans for next summer.

As for the player, he could be looking closely at the prospect of joining a club like Arsenal, where he would essentially continue in the same substitute role as at Inter. Given that he is comfortable at the San Siro and can play the Champions League with the Nerazzurri, the versatile defender could continue to stay at the club rather than move elsewhere.
